Pupil Dilation
For some patients, pupil dilation is an important part of the examination. Your optometrist may dilate your pupils with eye drops in order to get a better view of the retina. Pupils generally remain dilated for 3-4 hours, although on rare occasions it can last longer. The effects of dilated pupils include increased sensitivity to light and, for some people, blurring of the vision especially when looking at things up close. These effects are variable person to person, so if you have had difficulty after pupil dilation in the past, please alert your optometrist. Most people feel comfortable driving with dilated pupils, but the decision to do so is yours. To help with the light sensitivity we have disposable sunglasses available. If you do not have your own sunglasses with you, please request a pair even if you donât feel too light sensitive in the office. If you are unable to have your pupils dilated for any reason, please tell your optometrist so we can make arrangements.
